Inlays/Onlays

Inlays and onlays are most often used when the majority of a tooth’s biting surface has suffered damage. Inlays are used in the same capacity as a filling. An inlay is placed inside the cusp of the tooth. An onlay is a more extensive reconstruction procedure. An onlay is bonded over the outer surface of one or more cusps of the tooth/teeth.

Conventionally, the material of choice for inlays/onlays has been gold until recent years. Porcelain has become an increasingly popular and modern choice for inlays/onlays and fillings. The advantages include a more natural look to the color of the teeth and can actually strengthen the natural tooth. Generally a porcelain inlay/onlay can last several decades without needing to be replaced.

There will be two appointments required for the procedure. The first visit is for preparation of the inlay/onlay. The tooth is cleaned, decay removed and an impression made of the tooth. Then a temporary filling is applied.

On the second visit the temporary filling is removed and the inlay/onlay is fitted and then bonded.

Inlays/onlays can vastly improve the appearance of your smile.
