March/April 2016

Happy St. Patrick's Day The dentists, hygienists, and staff here at Maple Avenue Family Dentistry are true believers in preventive care and education, and we know that a lifetime of dental health and beautiful smiles comes from a true partnership between dentist and patient. That includes care for the whole family and why we are so proud to be a continued sponsor of the annual Nayatt School 5k. Offering a full day of fun-filled activities, this race and kid’s fun run offers a wonderful opportunity to spread the word about oral health care to our East Bay families. This year’s event will be held Saturday, April 2, 2016.

Dentists not only help children have great smiles, but keep them healthy, too. Research shows that pediatric dental disease is actually five times more common than asthma! Along with routine brushing and flossing, parents and children alike can help prevent dental disease with professional dental care. Sealants, for example, are a great way to protect your teeth against cavities and tooth decay.

Illustration depicting a sign with a Gum disease concept.Have you noticed that your gums are red, swollen, or bleed easily when you brush and floss your teeth? If so, you may have gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease. Gingivitis is reversible when it is treated properly, but can progress to a more serious condition called periodontitis. If gum disease is allowed to progress untreated, it can lead to pockets forming around the teeth and gums that become infected, and eventually destroy supportive tissue and bone.

In addition to oral health consequences, gum disease has been connected to other systemic diseases such as diabetes and even heart disease. In our infographic from Maple Avenue Family Dentistry (scroll to bottom),

you’ll learn more about the symptoms of periodontal disease, how it can affect your overall health, and what you can do to protect yourself. Please share with your friends and family!

New Patients Welcome

Early intervention is the best defense against periodontitis. Most tooth loss in people over age 35 is from Periodontal (Gum) Disease. It is essential that a periodontal exam is regularly performed. A periodontal exam includes an exam of the teeth, gums and x-rays of the underlying bone structure. If gum disease is indicated we can generally perform a non-surgical course of action that is highly effective and relatively painless.
