After a year of good service at Maple Avenue Family Dentistry, Dr. Richard Kim is returning back to school. He is pursuing his Master’s Degree in Public Health at Harvard University. We thank him for being a part of our team and wish him well in the future. Good luck Dr. Kim!

We are proud to offer care from ten of Rhode Island’s top dentists, many of which are highlighted in the current issue of Rhode Island Monthly as this year’s Top Dentists. So we don’t miss a beat here at Maple Avenue, owner Dr. Andrea Barone has carefully selected Dr. Angie Brafford to join our team. Just in from Chicago with her family, Dr. Brafford is a prosthodontist looking to practice general dentistry in a private practice. She will be stepping into Dr. Kim’s schedule starting mid-September. Welcome Dr. Brafford!

One blue mouthguard isolated on white background Remember to add a mouthguard for each child to your list of school supplies. Approximately 5 million teeth will be knocked out this year due to sports-related injuries. Don’t want to come in for an emergency treatment? Consider protecting your child’s teeth proactively by custom fitting them for a mouthguard. Visit with your hygienist or dentist at your next appointment to discuss the options and learn how mouthguards can help your athlete avoid dental traumas!

Manage it with Moe:

For over a decade, Maple Avenue Family Dentistry has exclusively used composite (tooth-colored) material for all fillings and restorations. Some dental insurances do not reimburse in full for this procedure; however it is standard care in our practice. Please ask if you need assistance with your insurance company.

Courtesy Note to Parents: Please remember, children below the age of 18 cannot be dropped off and left without an adult present to first check in and speak with the dentist/orthodontist. Thank you!

Toothy Tidbits

Fillings are a type of dental restoration used to treat low to moderate tooth decay or damage. They are generally used when damage has only affected
the surface, or enamel, of your tooth. At Maple Avenue Family Dentistry, we only use amalgam-free, composite fillings. Made of composite resin material, composite fillings are aesthetically superior and do not present the health risks associated with metal fillings. Some more information about composite:

  • tooth colored
  • bonds to the tooth structure; hence, less drilling is required to hold the material in place and less tooth is cut away
  • strengthens the decayed tooth
  • less likely to fracture
  • mercury-free!

Apple for the teacher? Grab one for yourself too! In addition to their basic health benefits, apples have numerous dental benefits. Because of their slightly astringent quality, they are an ideal food for cleansing and brightening teeth. The apples have sugar and acid in them which can damage the teeth, however. If a tooth brush is not available, rinsing the apple down with some water may

be the next best thing.
